Best Term Life Insurance Claim Settlement Ratio

Choosing Term Insurance is usually a long-term decision. You pay premiums today with one simple expectation: if something happens to you, the financial support promised by the policy should reach your family.

That is why the claim settlement ratio gets so much attention when people compare life insurers.

But there is a small problem with the way this number is often discussed online. A company showing a 99%+ claim settlement ratio does not automatically mean that its term insurance policy is the best choice.

There is more to the story.

What Is a Good Claim Settlement Ratio for Term Insurance?

A high and consistent claim settlement ratio is a positive sign, but it should not be the only reason to choose a term insurance company.

When comparing the best term insurance, look at the insurer's claim settlement record along with the policy terms, exclusions, financial strength, premium, coverage, claim process and how clearly the insurer explains its conditions.

One important point is often missed: IRDAI's published individual death-claim settlement ratio is not a term-insurance-only ratio. It covers individual death claims across an insurer's life insurance business.

So, don't treat a general life insurance claim settlement ratio as if it were a separate score exclusively for term plans.

What Is Claim Settlement Ratio?

In simple words, the claim settlement ratio (CSR) tells you what percentage of eligible individual death claims an insurer settled during a financial year, based on the number of claims.

For example, imagine an insurer received 1,000 individual death claims during a particular period and settled 990 of them. Its claim settlement ratio by number would be 99%. Sounds simple, right? It is-but there are a few details worth understanding.

The ratio can be calculated in different ways, including by number of claims and by claim amount. These two figures can tell different stories.

A company could settle a very high percentage of claims by number while the amount paid as a percentage of the total amount claimed is considerably different. That is why looking at just one percentage can sometimes give you an incomplete picture.

What Is the Latest Claim Settlement Ratio Data?

The latest Handbook on Indian Insurance Statistics 2024-25 is available through IRDAI and was updated on 3 February 2026.

For FY 2024-25, several life insurers reported individual death-claim settlement ratios above 99% by number. For example, HDFC Life reported 99.68%, while ICICI Prudential reported 99.31% and Axis Max Life reported 99.70% in the latest published data compiled from IRDAI statistics.  However, these figures should be read correctly.

They are individual death-claim settlement figures, not a guarantee that every future term insurance claim will be paid. A claim is still assessed according to the policy's terms and the information provided when the policy was purchased.

Why Does Claim Settlement Ratio Matter in Term Insurance?

Term insurance is different from many everyday purchases. You aren't buying something that you expect to use next week or next month. You're buying financial protection for your family for a future event that, hopefully, never happens.

If a claim does arise, your family may depend on that money for everyday expenses, loans, children's education or other financial commitments. Naturally, you want an insurer with a strong history of settling genuine claims. A consistently high ratio can therefore be one useful indicator when comparing insurers. But think of it as one piece of the puzzle, not the entire puzzle.

Is a 99% Claim Settlement Ratio Enough to Choose the Best Term Insurance?

No. A 99%+ ratio looks impressive, but it shouldn't end your research. Imagine two insurers:

  • Company A has a very high claim settlement ratio but a policy that doesn't suit your requirements.

  • Company B has a similarly strong record and offers terms, coverage and features that better match your family's needs.

Simply choosing Company A because its number is slightly higher wouldn't necessarily make sense. You should also look at: Policy exclusions, Premium and payment options, Sum assured, Policy tenure, Riders, Claim process, Financial strength, Customer service, Disclosure requirements, Policy wording

The cheapest premium or highest CSR isn't automatically the winner.

Claim Settlement Ratio by Number vs Claim Amount

This is one of the most useful things to understand when researching Term Insurance

Claim Settlement Ratio by Number This looks at the number of claims settled compared with the number of claims considered for settlement. It tells you how frequently claims were settled by count.

Claim Settlement Ratio by Amount This looks at the value of claims paid compared with the total claim amount considered.

It gives you another perspective because the value of individual claims can vary enormously. For someone buying a large term plan, this second measure can be useful to consider alongside the claim-settlement ratio by number.

Recent IRDAI-based data shows that these two measures can differ substantially for some insurers.  So if you're comparing insurers, don't stop at the first percentage you see on a website.

Does a High Claim Settlement Ratio Guarantee Claim Approval?

No. This is probably the most important thing to remember. A high CSR does not mean that every claim submitted to an insurer will automatically be accepted.

The insurer still checks the claim against the policy conditions. The information given when the policy was purchased also matters. For example, if an applicant doesn't disclose relevant information or provides incorrect details in the proposal form, it can create problems during claim assessment. That is why insurers and regulators repeatedly emphasize truthful disclosure.

When purchasing term insurance, be honest about your medical history, lifestyle, existing policies and other information requested in the proposal form.

A few minutes spent providing accurate information can be much more important than finding a company with a CSR that is 0.2% higher.

How Should You Compare the Best Term Insurance Plans?

Instead of asking only, “Which company has the highest claim settlement ratio?” ask a slightly better question: Which insurer offers suitable coverage and has a strong, consistent record of settling genuine claims?” Here's a practical way to compare.

1.Look at the Claim Settlement Record- Start with the latest available data, but don't rely on a single year's number. A consistent record over several years can give you more context than one unusually high or low figure.

2.Check the Claim Amount Data- If available, look beyond the number of claims and examine settlement by amount as well. This can give you a broader view of how claims were handled.

3.Check the Policy Terms- Read the exclusions and conditions carefully. A high CSR doesn't make an unsuitable policy suitable.

4.Choose Enough Life Cover- The purpose of term insurance is to provide financial protection to your dependents. Your cover should be considered in relation to income, liabilities, family expenses, future goals and existing assets.

5.Compare the Premium- Don't blindly choose the lowest premium. A small difference in premium may be less important than getting the coverage and policy terms right.

6.Understand the Riders- If you are considering riders such as accidental death, critical illness or disability-related benefits, check their individual terms rather than assuming they work exactly like the base term policy.

What Makes a Good Term Insurance Company?

There isn't a single number that can answer this. A good insurer should ideally have:

A strong claim settlement recordLook for consistency rather than chasing the highest single-year percentage.

Clear policy termsYou should be able to understand what is covered and what isn't.

Financial stabilityTerm insurance is a long-term commitment, so the insurer's financial position matters.

A straightforward claim processYour family should know where and how to submit a claim.

Suitable coverageThe policy should provide an appropriate level of protection for your family's financial needs.

Transparent communicationThe insurer should clearly explain premiums, exclusions, conditions and benefits.

Common Mistakes People Make While Checking Claim Settlement Ratio

Looking Only at the Highest Percentage - The highest number doesn't automatically mean the best insurer.

Confusing Life Insurance CSR With Term Insurance CSR

IRDAI's published individual death-claim ratio covers individual life insurance death claims across products. It is not a separate official CSR exclusively for term insurance.

Ignoring Claim Amount The percentage by number doesn't tell you everything about the value of claims settled.

Forgetting Policy Conditions Even a highly rated insurer will assess claims according to the policy terms.

Hiding Health Information This can create serious issues later. Always provide accurate information when purchasing a policy.

How Does a Term Insurance Claim Work?

The basic process is fairly straightforward. When the policyholder dies during the applicable policy period, the nominee informs the insurer and submits the required claim documents. The insurer then reviews the claim and verifies the relevant details.

If the claim meets the policy conditions and the required documentation is in order, the insurer processes the eligible benefit according to the policy terms.

The exact documents and process can vary. This is why it is a good idea to tell your nominee about the policy while you're still around.

Don't leave your family searching through old emails and files trying to figure out which insurer you purchased your policy from.

Why Should You Buy Term Insurance Early?

For a young working professional, term insurance may seem like something that can wait. But waiting has its own downside.

As you get older, your premium can generally be higher. Changes in health can also affect eligibility, underwriting or pricing. Buying when you're relatively young and healthy can therefore be worth considering.

More importantly, if your family depends on your income, the financial risk exists even if you're young. A term plan is designed to protect against that risk.

A Simple Example

Suppose Arjun is 30 years old and has a spouse, a home loan and plans to have children. He starts looking for the best term insurance. His first instinct is to find the insurer with the highest claim settlement ratio. Instead, he compares a few insurers.

He checks their claim settlement records, policy terms, coverage amount, exclusions, and premium and claim process. He also makes sure that all the information in his proposal form is accurate.

Eventually, he chooses a policy based on the overall picture rather than one percentage. That's a much healthier way to compare term insurance.

So, Which Is the Best Term Insurance?

The best term insurance is not necessarily the plan with the highest claim settlement ratio. It is the policy that provides an appropriate level of financial protection, comes from a reliable insurer and has terms that you and your family clearly understand.

Claim settlement ratio is an important comparison factor, but it shouldn't be treated as a guarantee or a ranking by itself. Before buying, compare the latest available claim data, claim amount information where available, policy terms, exclusions, premium, coverage and the insurer's overall track record.

And most importantly, fill out the proposal form honestly and keep your nominee informed about the policy. If you're researching Term Insurance, Policy Hub can help you understand the basics of term plans, coverage and the factors worth considering before making a decision.
